Media

Due to lack of communication network and negligible impact of national media in overall Karnali, the local NGO “Karnali Integrated Rural Development And Research Center” (KIRDARC) established the community Radio Karnali FM 105.2 MHZ in Jumla district for the first time in July, 2004.
Since then the community Radio Karnali FM 105.2 MHZ has been operated under Nepalese National Broadcasting Act 1992 that is motivated by community well being and not for commercial considerations. It has covered 18 VDCs (Chandanath, mahat, kartik swami, talium, lamra, Hakku, tatopani, kudari, raralihi, depalgaun, grajayangkot ,patarkola, kalikaketu, narakot, jumlakot, gutichaur, chumchaur and tamti) of Jumla district, 2 VDCs (Rachhulli and Phoiamahadev) of Kalikot district and 2 VDCs (Narku and Kalika) of Dolpa district. It aired in a total of 22 VDCs of three districts (Jumla, Kalikot and Dolpa) in the Karnali zone.
The main purpose of Radio Karnali FM is to give communities access to the means of communication so that most relevant information – educational and development – is disseminated and exchanged. As well as it gives to community an opportunity to express themselves socially, politically and culturally. This communication also addresses contemporary issues as such promoting peace, democracy, human rights, good governance, and development, during the time of conflict and post conflict situation in the country. It also helps disadvantage community groups such as women, children, dalit, indigenous and conflict affected people, IDPs, to speak their own affairs.
